… The villagers told me a nice story about how Tsomo Riri got its name. A woman called Tsomo was riding a yak, when the beast decided that the sun was too hot for him (the Ladakhi sun can burn you at 15,000 feet) and started moving towards the lake. She tried her best to stop him, shouting ‘riri, riri’ which means ‘stop, stop’in Tibetan, I was told. But the yak had had enough of the sun and plunged into the lake, where both drowned. Hence, the lake is known as Tsomo Riri.
… The next day we went to the Enchey Gompa, a small aesthetically built monastery set in sylvan surroundings. Enchey is the older of the two, built in 1909 at the exact spot where the hermitage of the dying Lama Druptob Karpo once stood. This Lama flew in from South Sikkim all the way to Gangtok-must have had strong wings. Logically speaking all these flying Lamas must be having one of two things either hallucinated acolytes, read ‘eye-witnesses’, or, it stands to reason, strong wings.
