NATURAL HISTORY / TRAVEL
“A top-notch tale for readers interested in wildlife.”
-Publishers Weekly
Tiger Moon is Fiona and Mel Sunquist’s account of their two years among the elusive and highly endangered tigers of Nepal’s Royal Chitwan National Park. Tracking the tigers on elephantback and fitting them with radio collars, the Sunquists gathered detailed information on the tigers’ personalities, food habits, living arrangements, and interactions with sur- rounding wildlife. They also write of their Nepali colleagues, with whom they lived, worked, and sometimes nearly died in this exotic and remark- ably beautiful setting.
“Although Tiger Moon] is an informed investigation of the social behavior and life history of wild tigers, it is also a personal account, as seen through the eyes of Fiona Sunquist and recorded in her diary. Tiger Moon is the story of what it is like to live and work in Nepal-not only the adventure and excitement but also the day-to-day grind of getting up. going out, and coming back without much to show for your efforts…. [It] is full of unusual anecdotes: what it is like to be eye-to-eye with a short- sighted, one-horned rhinoceros; how it feels to have dangerously unpre- dictable sloth bears shuffle by, leopards prowl the campsite’s perimeter, scores of brilliant birds flit overhead, and camp elephants reveal their personalities. Sounds punctuate the book: deer bark at real or imagined predators, elephants trumpet, parakeets shriek, tigers roar. It is the roaring that captures one’s attention, for the tiger more than any other predator is the symbol of power, strength, and untamed wilderness.” -Ronald L. Tilson, Natural History
“Fiona Sunquist’s prose is vivid, whether she is speaking of the animals, the nearby villagers, or the transcendent beauty of the region.” -Travel-Holiday
