The history of growth of manufacturing industry in Nepal could be traced back to more than half a century ago, even before the advent of exercises in Development Planning during mid 1950s. However, the current situation indicates that this sector contributes less than 10 percent to GDP and employs around 2 percent of the work force. The explanation for this slow progress of manufacturing activities could be found in several fronts, the most important may be lack of a clear-cut vision in strategy and policy framework designed for the growth of manufacturing sector. A sound base for industrial growth in Nepal is yet to be achieved, and a number of aspects and issues are to be dealt with and addressed for. The author, in this book has attempted to highlight crucial industrial issues in Nepal, their links with the export sector and several operational problems confronting the manufacturing units. A number of viable and competent measures are suggested and a framework is recommended for grassroots level promotion of manufacturing activities in the country.
