This book deals with various aspects of North-South relations, that is, the relations between the developed and the developing countries. First, the meetings of the UNCTAD are vetted focussing on the demands of the South from the North. Then the trade problems of the South are discussed. The impact of the Uruguay Round on both the North and the South are scrutinized.
In most countries of the South, agriculture is a dominant sector. Problems of agricultural development and poverty are, thus, examined. The factors responsible for the decline in aid to this sector are touched upon.
The NAM and the G-7 summits are reviewed with reference to the North-South issues. It is noted that the recommendations of these summits have not been translated into action.
Environmental aspects should be considered in the economic decision-making process of both the North and the South. In this context, the relationship between environment and the various sectors of the economy are probed into. Finally, some suggestions are put forward for reviving the North-South dialogue.
