There is no history per se – independent of the historian’s concepts of history – the concepts which transform surviving past artefacts (inscriptions, monu- ments, and archaeological remains) into representations of the past.
Although this monograph is primarily an exposure of the so-called “impeccable historians”, it is also an essay on the state of the art of historiography in Nepal. Part of its purpose is to show how Nepal’s history is being distorted by political myths, cultural biases, and above all by social prejudices which often harbour in the garb of “broad-minded nationalism”.
Malla believes that without the help of extensive field-work based on archaeology, ethnography, linguis- tics, and anthropology it is not possible to write reliable history of ancient Nepal on the basis of Sanskrit inscriptions alone, because these inscriptions are the Hindu veneer at the top of a tribal social pyramid elites.
