Within ancient mythology “WALUNG” was evolved and derived by two terms “Wa” (himalayan mountain fox) and “Lung” (land), perhaps group of travellers lost their path on the snow, followed footsteps paved by “Wa”, where they arrived at the place “Lung” and settled a village naming Walung. Local villagers and Tibetan speaking communities call Walung whereas Nepali speaking communities say Olangchung Gola.
The history of Walung is believed to began since naming the village.Walung is said to be 16th century old as historians, researchers and elderly locals estimates that village is more than five hundred years old. However in- depth study with careful research is essential in order to find out the exact history.
Walung was historically not only a trading route but also trading entrepot for tri-nations Tibet, Nepal, and India. The village is represented by Buddhist Nyingmapa tradition of reknowned Dikyi Choeling Gomba including Kutemba (local Shamans) with an existing pre-Buddhist, Bon religion of nature worshippings such as several local gods/godesses, deities and spirits.
