PHIL DEUTSCHLE Cover illustration from a painting by Martin Jordan
THE TWO YEAR MOUNTAIN describes the journey, both physical and emotional, made by Phil Deutschle during his two years as a volunteer in Nepal. In his remote Himalayan village the author faces many difficulties: struggling to teach science in the Nepali language, gradually adapting to village life, enduring separation from the girl he left behind.
The narrative alternates between descriptions of his life in the village with a climbing expedition to the Everest region that concludes his spell in Nepal. His final goal is Pharchamo, 20,580 ft, which he climbs alone, recklessly, mourning the ‘small death’ experienced when he finally leaves the mountain village that now feels more like home than his native America.
