Mr Lewisham has a scheme, but the one thing he did not reckon on was falling in love
Mr Lewisham studies science with Miss Heydinger. She is as bright as he, but so unremarkable in her looks that he would be hard-pressed to tell you the colour of her eyes. She earns his respect but not his love.
For love is not part of Lewisham’s scheme, until Ethel, his childhood sweetheart, reappears. She sweeps him off his feet but she is noddle-headed and easily led. Soon enough Lewisham’s work goes to pot and he finds himself drifting from the solidity of science to the misty world of spiritualists and charlatans.
