Learning Language Through Lyrics – Matthew J. Eynon, Ram Kumar Panday

Matthew J. Eynon was born in Cleveland, Ohio and received his bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University in 1977. Upon graduation he served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer to Nepal (1977-1980) where he was a high school science teacher in the village of Rukumkot, Rukum District, far western Nepal. It was while living in Nepal during these two years that he was introduced to, and became interested in, Nepali songs and Nepali language. He earned Master’s degrees from Ohio University (1980) and Indiana University (1983 & 1989) and a Ph.D. from Indiana University (1992). He has taught as an exchange professor at the Chinese Cultural University in Taiwan (1998-2000) and he currently teaches in the Department of Asian Studies, Tenri University. His publications include Learning Language Through Lyrics: Classical Japanese Pop (Vols. 1 & 2). He currently resides in Tenri City, Nara Prefecture, Japan.
Ram Kumar Panday was born in Jawalakhel, Lalitpur, Nepal. He received his undergraduate degree from Patan College in 1968. After graduation he acquired field experiences in rural and remote sections of Nepal. Afterwards he entered the university sector in 1972 and has been involved in teaching and researching down to the present. He is known as a writer, artist and scholar in Nepal and abroad. He has studied different aspects of the nature and culture of various countries and earned M.A. and M.Ed. degrees from Tribhuvan University in 1970 and 1973 respectively. He has participated in international conferences on cultural diversities and education under the auspices of various UNESCO programs, and has also been the recipient of fellowships from the Japan Foundation and Vermont Studio Center, U.S.A. He has received medals and awards for his contributions to the arts and literature of Nepal and his various publications include work on Nepal studies as well as poems, ballads, haiku, et cetera in the field of literature. He is currently working in the Faculty of Education, Tribhuvan University, Nepal.
