Born in 1932, in the historic fort of Pratapgad in Satara District, Mr. Ganesh Dattatray Puranik had his early education in Mahad, a small town at the foot of Raigad, the erstwhile capital of Maratha Kingdom. He worked under the State as well as Central Governments and finally settled in a British Company, Kvaerner Powergas India Ltd. He retired from this company in 1990 as Senior Project Officer and thereafter worked there itself for eight long years on extended contract basis. He finally retired in March 1998. During his tenure in the Company, he participated in many trekking activities sponsored by the Company’s Staff Club. He also made many trips to Himalayas. In 1997, he completed the arduous Amarnath Yatra and next year itself undertook the Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra. He contributed many informative articles to Staff Club’s magazine.
The present book is an attempt to project the Yatra in all its aspects providing valuable historical, mythical and geographical details.
